The idea of leprosy may evoke feelings of fear; fear of contagion, fear of outbreak. Though for most this idea is far removed, the stuff of history. But on the beautiful windswept shore of the island of Molokai, in Hawaii this history is part of the very foundation. It was here that nearly 8,000 men, women and children were exiled and quarantined beginning in the 1860s. Now this nearly deserted location has become a tourist destination for the daring. In this episode, Jen will explain the history and treatment of leprosy as well as the quarantine at Kalaupapa.
